SUWIC has leading expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of thermal processes using the FLUENT code. This provides industry with three- dimensional models of processes, predicting temperatures, gaseous flow field velocities, concentrations of the product gases (e.g. CO, CO2, NOx), gas residence times, particle tracks, and other properties.
We have extensive and specialised experience of the application of commercial CFD models such as 'FLUENT' especially to combustion problems. Normally, the setting up of CFD models can be very time-consuming, however a software package called 'FLINT' has been specially developed to accelerate that stage of the modelling process. Its assistance is also especially helpful for newcomers to CFD, so it is used in the teaching of CFD techniques within the department as well as in CFD application.
We have developed a specialised modelling package called 'FLIC' (FLuid dynamic Incinerator Code), which allows a wide variety of incineration problems to be set up and modelled in a similar manner to fluid flow problems. FLIC's output is graphical, and is very similar to that produced by CFD modelling software like 'FLUENT'.
FLIC and FLUENT models have occasionally been combined to permit modelling of the combustion in the gas phase above a burning bed to be achieved in conjunction with FLIC's modelling of the drying, volatilisation and combustion processes taking place within the bed itself.
The combination of FLIC and FLUENT CFD models allow SUWIC researchers to predict temperatures, particle and gas flow fields and concentrations in incinerators and other process plant.
